Dual Purpose crest of the Lost Coast

Lost Coast

The day had finally arrived to travel the Lost Coast. Immediately after being placed back in Northern California changed my BMW 1100 RT for a KLR 650 2008. What better route to a takeover drive? After many years of "hotel" tour that was transitioning back to my "package light freeze at night" mode. The road Lost Coast USAL and road conditions were unknown. The winter months of 2008 had seen a lot of rain in the north coast near Eureka in California and my research stated that roads may be impassable when wet. Could the KLR be able to conquer the King Range and Wildlife Sinkyone launched the road in late March? To cover my bets got two tie down straps motorcycle possible could double in tow straps. My riding partner for this trip would be a partner University 19 years ago. Glenn had called the day before with a cryptic "I bought something that will handle anything the road to launch us. "Key messages are usually never good. Maybe the extra space of the straps was taking a cheap insurance. When we were Triple A fear to tread.

early start Sunday morning was delayed until 3:00 pm due to the commitments of Easter. The afternoon came and went. Glenn got a call from your computer Start again no mystery. Undoubtedly a dark omen of things to come. The evening is marked by the return at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Glenn hobbled in Rohnert Park, CA around 8:30 pm, cold, lost, but armed with a hearty appetite and an equally cordial and optimistic attitude, definitely the kind of partner and the attitude you need when venturing into the unknown. The mystery of the machinery came in the form of a 1985 KLR 600! The museum piece $ 800.00 was a robbery until the bike hard starting continued to flood the carburetor aftermarket two times and killed the battery (stealing was the right time period, but only say the victim was). Any tough time, Glenn solved the problem on Sunday and went on from Sacramento to Sonoma County. My mom was very happy to feed the weary traveler with a home-cooked meals. We modified the game plan that night and decided not to mount the Trinidad National Heritage Scenic Highway (also known as the road 299 / 3) and the Bigfoot Scenic Byway (Hwy 96) Eureka loop. The bikes were prepared and ready, despite a small incident with my newly purchased assembly. I di account should not have delayed buying a center stand. While filling the tires earlier in the day fell on the bike I pushed on stems with some force too. In favor of the KLR, the new radiator shrouds stood the plastic tip over and the "bug" (as my daughter calls him) went with just two small scratches.

The next morning we headed north on Highway 101 at the beginning of cooler northern California, two ends of the spectrum KLR thumping along in harmony. At 8:30 am, decided to throw in Cloverdale and have a quick bite at the local McDonalds. An old timer inquired about our trip and told us how he used to run his Harley Davidson against the British invasion of the back of the BSA in 1949, but lost to the lightest, fastest bikes when it comes to cross country races. In coffee talk turned to younger days. We shared our experience in the cavalry (Glenn pilot in the Air Cav, I ground a browser, and a gift of sixteen horse rider back in 1938). Shortly after their day Don cavalry was around the South China Sea. His new ride was the USS Snapper, 1928 was a sub who managed to leave the port of Manila before the fall of the Philippines. He wished he could join us on our bike trip, but his knee replacement was within a few days. Any adventure will find their experiences paled depth charges during the war. We thanked him for his sacrifice and service to the country as we head toward the northwest.

Bikes made quick work of the highway 128 to Mendocino and he fell into an easy pace through the vineyards and redwood trees. In Fort Bragg tried to find a land route eastward and again Glenblair to 101 in order to extort money from our plans and cargo bikes. We were frustrated by dead ends and closed access, but rewarded by the one-lane dirt roads. Doubling again will be Highway 1, picking up the pace, energized by the waves and redwoods. Moving Rockport that scanned for 435/Usal Highway road but so in love with this part of Highway 101 at Leggett we were almost before he discovered he had lost our turn. Backtracking we find 431. But for the fact that we knew it was at mile marker 90.88 would never have found. The starting point was like a private dirt road. How to care used to be a route is beyond me. They must have gone through several hills given the strong teams and harsh conditions. The views were breathtaking as we looked down in the Pacific. Accompanying the landscape was a chance encounter with a bear cub wandering down the road. Surprised by "A Bug's" growl ran Mom again and continue our trip. The KLR were not challenged by the roads and we believe that the estimated 3 hours to get to Shelter Cove was a miscalculation. Soon learn 6 hours was barely enough. I also discovered that years of "hotel" had taught me to pack in my Givi top case. The first fault and only My KLR was evident when Glenn called out to stop me. Rolling down the hill was my Givi and half of my luggage KLR! The tether straps were put into service earlier than I expected.

Soon we meet the first of many delays. Mud, and lots of it. The KLR could not do it through think soup back out of control and falling sideways. Glenn and I ported our team when necessary and then abused our mountains, pushing and insulting machines in the mud. In the worst moment, when we find a detour to a seemingly insurmountable part of the road, Marcos de San José (in a trap Jeep was the only meeting of other human beings in the scenic road), destroyed the bridge (for motorcycles of less) as his Jeep chewed the ground. Rebounding from a tree, but managed to erase any notion of going back. For better or for worse we were committed. Not more than 200 meters on the road to USAL we had to download the KLR and push back our mountains as the pilot "rowing" to over a foot and a half wide road. A fall on the right and the bikes they disappear below the surface as dark as USS Snapper made to evade the Japanese warships seeking revenge. A fall to the left and the KLR would collapse the wall of the cliff to the Pacific. Riding bikes through the narrow path was too risky as the road itself was full of mud and the tires could possibly slip. A short adrenaline filled beats heart later, the bikes were safe at all, charged and moving at high speed. USAL road could support KTM and BMW GS Adventures in the dry season, but in the winter months is nothing greater than a KLR would be difficult to navigate the numerous mud bogs. The largest bicycle would be exhausting for abuse through the calf high mud. When we finally reached the USAL Beach, were rewarded with pristine beaches. The seafront was almost abandoned, and the KLR was be able to cross many streams that we have explored the beach. The "Bug" loved the fresh air of the ocean, but the KLR 600 started to show its warts. In the last stretch before reaching the KLR 600 Shelter Cove very run in one of the steepest parts of the route. Glenn put the chicken bones and blood sprayed into the carburetor, no luck. Un-strapping of a tie straps of my Givi me hooked to the 600 and the "Bug" transformed into "The Donkey", as I drag the 600 up the hill. One day many in the first place. A quick dance of the gods of the motorcycle and 600 fired up and we were obliged Shelter Cove. The night in Shelter Cove was one of the most beautiful I have spent in the north coast of California. The wind was completely absent and the stars shone brighter than the light in the lighthouse out of service. A few touches of Kentucky Bourbon made the night complete.

A late start of the day due to the blockade of two Glenn his clothes in the dryer and a room that does not respond "theft of a bicycle" We delayed until 10:30. I began to feel that he was the victim in this purchase and it was not the master "mechanic" in Sacramento who sold the bike Glenn. Another quart of chicken blood and the bike roared to life. Gama entered King's Road and crossed into another world. The range has received more than its average share of rainfall during the winter. The fog shrouded the green reminds us of the jungle of Costa Rica and Ecuador. Taking a wrong turn, we have followed the impasse rocky road Trailhead Lighting. Rocks negatively affected our tires, but the scenery was worth the cost in rubber. The tight and twisty, uphill climb to the Honeydew way was one of the best parts of travel. It was challenged only by the route of Petrolia to Ferndale. This part of the crooked road along the shore and then parallel to waves. Glenn played the role of a pawn as he led a cow walking in the road and back into the field as a temperamental horse. Anything can be thrown your way at the Lost Coast.

Leaving the sea behind us, which quickly climbed to 2,400 feet of Bunker Hill and then down to a beautiful valley. Bear River Crossing it is emptied into the ocean, Glenn said zigzag up the slope. I pumped his arm in the response and rolled on the throttle. In the subsequent rise became a with our machines to the point where he felt as if the bikes disappeared and we are "ski" through the picturesque landscape of northern California. The atmosphere was one mixture of Switzerland and southern England, the narrow two-lane roads full of various shrubs, trees and livestock races. We are sad to see disappear in our Lost Coast mirrors, but looks forward to the exploration of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Avenue of the Giants, and the Eel River.

Can not find a Eureka campsite we went to the Fortune 600 KLR died in the street. Persuading bike life Glenn was waiting in the trailer park were managed a wooden hut for a pittance. Money well considering the rain came that night. After filling their bellies with our fair share of beer on the River Brewery Eel, Glenn fills his ego to flirt with the waiter very attractive woman body builder. We needed to sleep as the road began to take its toll. Tomorrow would be very difficult for both.

The next morning was the KLR DOA, but Glenn was reluctant to admit it. After persuading him to get a U-Haul than doubled in the "Bug" and we went through Ferndale. We were pushing at 11:30 am and the weather was a factor as the work came the next day. On the way saw a jeep Glenn and a tire shop. Tom, the owner and the mechanic, took pity on us and gave us the keys to his truck and KLR 600 received a new lease on life. In two hours we were rolling south on Highway 101, thanks to Tom and his prompt attention. Although this was my fourth time on Avenida of the Giants, was surprised by the 40 miles of beauty. The coup de grace was when we received a free "Drive through the tree" Experience a fellow KLR rider.

The lowest point was 11 miles north of Laytonville. KLR 600 gave up his ninth life and died on the west side of 101. Suspecting fuel starvation I did run into despair Laytonville gas. False hope that the bike had been torn off life support. A CHP officer radio a tow truck arrived at 6:30 pm and Glenn was on his own. 35F to climate and an hour trip from two Laytonville ran to the south. Two things helped me survive the journey, the Hotgrips on my KLR and singing every cadence in the top of my lungs. 20:40 When I was eating hot food in the target, while Glenn was writing a new chapter on motorcycling on the edge. A day and a half after he made it back to Sacramento. A better story that one of several cold beers.

By sheer diversity of terrain, vegetation, animals and the road can not beat the conditions of Lost Coast of California. Mount dual purpose milk more fun per mile than almost any bike I have ever ridden. Despite all the noise sites on the fairing falling apart due to vibration and the new fourth-largest consumer KLR oil, is simply not the case with this bike. Although an operator-induced overturning, the tip of the KLR survived an encounter with a concrete parking and after 2,000 miles of the "Bug" has not consumed all the oil. The KLR will remain stable regardless of the bicycle type what comes next. For pure versatility and "bang for the buck" fun, this bike can not be beat.
