Denver Day Trip to Grand Lake for Families
The joy of living in Denver or just visiting the wealth of summer activities. A great day trip is a the Great Lake. You are visiting the headwaters of the Colorado River and experience the thrill and beauty of a high mountain lake surrounded by mountains covered with snow. Lake serves as a border to Rocky Mountain Park. You have a good chance in the detection of deer, elk, moose and osprey around the lake.
But a day trip to Grand Lake is not just a couple of hours on the lake. How not to be at least half the fun. Non-stop is a unit of two hours but why hurry. Here are some highlights and places you might want to stop along the way to Denver.
Roadblocks on I-70 as it approaches the exit of Morrison
This road was cut in 1971 and reveals the extent of the elevation of the land in the plains of the Rocky Mountains. You see sedimentary rocks pointing to the sky at 45 degrees. When these rocks were formed almost 140 to 95 million years when dinosaurs still walked the Earth. Its tracks can be seen in the nearby Cordillera of Dinosaurs in Morrison. Come in and take a walk down the hill.
Herd of buffalo Mirador
Just after the exit of Genesee is a herd of buffalo which is maintained by the City and County of Denver. The herd is located on both sides of the road.
Idaho Springs
On January 7, 1859 the discovery of gold in the valley leading to the gold rush of the Rocky Mountains. There is evidence of mining gold in the hills along I-70 near Idaho Springs. Especially the evidence of former miners is the tailings (crushed rock left over from mining activities). Keep eyes open as you are likely to see Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep along the road from Idaho Springs to Empire.
After Dumont ready to turn off the I-70 to Route 40 at exit 232 – detour Empire, Winter Park, Grand Lake, and Rocky Mountain National Park.
Empire and Peck House
Empire was founded as a mining town for gold and silver in the 19th century. The Peck House, built in 1862, located on the main road is the hotel oldest extant in Colorado. The hills all empires are home to a large herd of Rocky Mountain sheep.
Berthoud Pass
Edward L. Berthoud, a railway inspector, and Jim Bridger discovered the passage in 1861. It began as a wagon road. At its peak, crosses over the Continental Divide of 11 307 feet above sea level. There are nine zigzag along the harbor, offering breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.
Winter Park Ski Area
The oldest, continuously open ski area in Colorado. Summer offers an alpine slide, chair lift for mountain biking and miniature golf.
Tabernash
A center rail of age during a time when rail traffic was on the Continental Divide Instead of going through the Moffat Tunnel.
Granby
The mall Grand County. The elementary school has an area great game if you are traveling with small and needs a break. If you want an all-terrain vehicle "ATV income> and then stops for the World Power.
Route 34 – Exit Granby, turn right on Route 34 to the National Park of the Rocky Mountains.
Lake Granby
Passing Lake Granby. Stop at one in the turn-off and see if you spot Abe Lincoln lying in the top of the ridge to the east.
Shadow Mountain and the Great Lake
These two lakes are connected by a canal and form the headwaters of the Colorado River. title = "Rent a Boat"> Rent a boat and enjoy a cruise on the lake. There are islands with picnic tables or take lunch in one of the many cafes or restaurants in the city of Grand Lake.
Return Denver
On his way home he can return by the same route or head over Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park. You Drive through the park and then through Boulder. Add one hour for the unit, but the views are incomparable. Grab dinner in the commercial center of the Pearl Street to complete his one-day trip a street show.
I will not go so fast? Turn your day trip on a weekend trip. Overnight in Grand County and see even more. There are plenty of campsites or try a bed and breakfast in a mountain hospitality.
