Trailers are difficult to handle. , Right? That's what I always thought, because when I was 16 years old and had been driving for only a few months I had to drive our 17 'boat to the lake.
It was very hard to keep that trailer in the lane at highway speeds. It was swerving all over. I figured that was the way trailers are supposed to be. Little did I have a most traumatic experience was in my future.
One night I was towing a 2 place ATV trailer by a city street when he started swinging away and launch control the car back and forth over four lanes of traffic. No matter what I did I could not regain control of the car and trailer. The application of the brakes only seemed to worsen the situation. All I could do was take the foot off the brake and accelerator and direct for all he was worth.
Finally the speed car started down and disappeared reciprocating action until, at about 10 mph I was able to use the brakes and come to a stop. Cars had stopped and left the way to give me the room. Fortunately did not hit anyone.
WHAT was the problem?
TOW vehicle was inadequate?
Was something wrong with the trailer?
It was an ATV trailer that had been used dozens of times before, the same car towed, and he had loaded with loads more heavy.
So what was happening?
It is a magical concept called "tongue weight" in the world trailer. tongue weight is the downward force the ATV trailer hitch is applied to the hitch ball.

If not enough tongue weight, or weight negative language (if the coupler made stops at the hitch ball), the ATV trailer will be unstable in the medium to high speeds.
How to avoid this problem?
ATV Trailers For the Recommended tongue weight is 10% to 15% of the total weight of the trailer and load. This means that loads from 10-15% by weight to the front the trailer.
For example, a 2 place ATV trailer loaded with two large ATVs that weigh about 2200 pounds. So the minimum tongue weight would be 220 pounds. An even better would be 15% or 330 pounds.
Most trailer hitches and couplers are rated for at least 500 pounds of tab. If the tongue weight is more than 10% and low maximum hitch and hitch, this is in the correct range.

Do not assume that you have proper tongue weight, check it. If you have no way of checking that takes them to a trailer shop or workshop coupling and have them check for you.
When you tow a trailer loaded for the first time, accelerate slowly.
Accelerate to 30 mph and see if the trailer ATV feels stable. Doing so can accelerate to 40 miles per hour, check again. I do not feel any rocking or oscillation of the trailer. If it feels good and solid 40 mph then try 50, then 60, 70 and 75.
The trailer should feel rock solid behind the tow vehicle at any speed. If not, stop immediately and seek professional help to correct the problem,
