Backcountry Scenic Drives: Mogollon Rim Road

The highest road in Arizona cuts 200 miles through the center of the state at a height impressive 7,000 feet. Traveling around Sedona to the New Mexico border, this road hugs the edge of the Mogollon Rim. A rapid descent from edge to the canyon is 2,000 meters in some places.

This amazing geological phenomenon that creates a backbone "of Arizona" separates the low desert of southern scorching heat exchanger highest elevation, temperate ponderosa pine and cedar forests of northern Arizona. The Mogollon Rim Road (Mogollon pronounced "muggy-own") provides a fresh and serene perch to see forever in southern Arizona's deserts.

Today, the trail follows sections an original military supply route was built in 1872 by General George Crook. The wagon road connected Fort Whipple in Prescott to Fort Apache and Camp Verde. The army established the strong to protect the first settlers of frequent attacks by the Apaches, rebelling against the takeover of their lands and the relocation of the reserves.

General Crook took command of the military in 1871 Arizona Territory. Surprisingly, his original trip to Fort Apache Fort Whipple was the basis of the route. During construction, the thief men measure highway mileage of the road with a rag tied to the wheel of a car. A number of revolutions of the canvas equaled a mile. The soldiers then carved a smooth patch of nearby trees and rocks and then burnt by the mileage. Botero generally included a letter. For example, 13 miles from Fort Verde would marked by "V13." Today, a few old trees and rocks still bear the marks original fire thief. Many places of interest along the trail is named after the ancient route mileage, and Thirteen Mile Rock and Twentynine Mile Lake.

Approximately 15 miles of the western tip, within walking distance north of the main track is the site of General Springs cabin. Louis Fisher wooden structure built in 1914 or 1915, and was used as a monitoring station for many years. The cabin sits next to water sources used by General Crook and was reputed to be the place from where he escaped death during a surprise attack Apache. Camp around the historic cabin is prohibited, but the area makes an excellent place to stop and have a picnic lunch.

Opposite the turnoff to the cabin is walking tunnel trailhead. Walk down to see the ambitious project after: a tunnel that was to dig through 3,100 feet of rock Mogollon Rim to Flagstaff to connect the rich mines of Globe by rail. The tunnel would be a branch of the Pacific Railway and the Atlantic, which was developed through Flagstaff Albuquerque en route to the West Coast.

The proposed 160 miles of the Mineral Belt Railroad was funded and construction began in incredibly rough terrain. Funding for the project soon dried up after the construction of only 40 miles of railroad and blasting only 70 meters into the rock rim. The incomplete tunnel is located in General Springs Canyon, a low point on the edge.

Most narrow graded gravel and dirt road runs through ponderosa pine forest fresh. Many places along the road carried out along the right edge with stunning views of the canyons and good angles to see the jagged edge itself. Be careful walking on the edge of the rim, especially in wet conditions. Some trees on the edge hold memorial plaques to those who have fallen accidentally.

The road is uneven in some places, but overall the main runway is not a technical challenge. Many little more difficult trails to leave the main road. South trails lead to viewpoints and campsites isolated on the rim, and north, 4WD tracks lead to spectacular views.

The area is a haven for campers. Backcountry campsites abound, but one of the best is at the Hi-View Point, an exceptional scenic overlook, located on the rim. There are also developed national forest camps in Kehl Spring, just off the runway at Knoll Lake, Bear Canyon Lake, and several sites in Woods Canyon Lake, among others.

At the eastern end of the runway within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest runs within the recreation area popular Rim Lakes. Note that motorized travel allowed on the roads were only, all-terrain vehicles are not allowed, and there are restrictions on camping in this area.
