Avoid predators
There is a high profile case sexual assault occurs in our province right now. It is the kidnapping and sexual assault of a teenage girl by a man posing as a police officer. The youth was detained by an individual who seemed to be an RCMP uniform, with lights on the grid in his car. He was informed that its label expiration of such vehicles and was instructed to enter the rear of the car. Believing he was a police officer that she agreed. Once in the car, was taken to a secondary place and repeatedly sexually assaulted. Much later was released by her abductor. There is also the case of the California teenager who was raped while attending a school dance. They are two very different cases of predatory violence with some similar themes. It is important to note that in both cases the victim was deceived or brought to a secondary location. Statistically your chances of survival decrease rapidly go to a second location. In this case none of the young women knew he was being led / led to a secondary position.
Let me begin by saying they did nothing bad. The very fact that they survived their terrible experience means that these young women did everything right. This month I wanted to talk to you about predators and some strategies to identify and prevent / them escaping. I refer generically to predators like wolves. However, there are different types of wolves, each one with its own modus operandi. As a peace officer has the opportunity to work with all types of predators and observe in action. It is a unique opportunity to learn why and how these types of individuals choose certain types of victims over others and our options for avoidance, escape or defense. Say there is considerable controversy in the field as to how this objective can be best accomplished. I would like to offer my point of view.
Predator Dynamics
It is important to understand that there is an element common to all abusive attacks, and they all require a victim, also known as you. If you remove yourself from the equation as a possible victim, the crime can not occur. This is more simplified and is not always possible, the point being that possesses strong personal skills Security does a great deal to reduce their risk of being targeted as a potential victim in the first place.
It is also important to note that predators is seen as a commodity, a means to an end (sex, money, goods, drugs, status and power) and nothing else. Working on a team of Emergency Response I have witnessed and responded to hundreds of assaults, attacks and ambushes. Witnessing and dealing with such incidents as did some things very clear.
- Predators no fair fight. Use ambush, deception, surprise, shock and sudden violence too quickly subdue their victims and get what they need. They also use a variety social engineering techniques to the size of or access to potential victims.
- Not all predators are the same. There are some generalizations we can do about predators, but that all predators are the same is dangerous and incorrect. There is a difference between how a group of gang members to coordinate the assault on a rival and how a rapist or child molester stalks predators, selects and acquires their victims. It is vital to adapt their training and education and the staff of the Security Plan to include the types of predators that are relevant to you.
- Predators land use, tactics and surprise in their favor. It only makes sense. A predator is looking for a resource (you) and take him out in an environment that puts him / her in the least amount of risk.
- Predators are experts at recognizing those who have less confidence, only without noticing and take advantage of their situation. Like their wild counterparts, predators always try to select the weak, insecure, unsure or have no confidence in itself. To a predator this greatly reduces your risk of reprisals, being captured or escape for the prey and increases your chances of success.
- In most cases, the predator will have the advantage. Sorry, but true. You can train and prepare how to reduce your risk of being placed on their radar, first where and how to survive if they are going. However you can always predict who, what, where, when and why a particular objective will be elected. Action is always faster than reaction, so be prepared for the reality that if you are attacked is likely to be of the direction and angle you least expect it and places her attacker in the greatest advantage. You may have to defend damage, stunning or misplaced. Her attacker is already in a highly adrenaline and be in a position normal. Never assume that you will deal quickly or easily with a mad adrenaline predator. It is a dangerous assumption and can cost you your life.
- Predators often hunt in packs. Always be aware of the possibility that there may be more than one individual. Group dynamics are complex and fluid and can change quickly.
Predators
As I said earlier, not all predators are created equal. The scam is the predator that most of us would probably find at some point in our lives. This is the individual who has learned that is easy to get what they want through intimidation, threats and intimidation. Sociologists may disagree, but I think most criminals fall into this category. They see what they want to take from others as their right and not above using violence to get it if they have to. A crack addict with a knife is as potentially lethal as a predator and a serial murderer. If you take nothing else away from this article take this, never make assumptions. General cons get to spend time in prison and learn to hone their depredations in prison. Prisons are an interesting place. Put a handful of people who victimize others in a closed environment and what to do? The answer is to continue to victimize others. Predators are not above taking advantage of other weaker criminals.
are top predators in the food chain. This is a different animal all together. These predators are different because they are the motivation is different. They are still looking at you as a means to an end, but are motivated by an inner drive or force (fantasy) to commit the act. The murderers in series, serial rapists, sociopaths who fall into this category. Often when I read the reports of what these people have done, it is difficult to link the act individual. Many of them seem normal, reasonably intelligent and charming. Slavering monsters not indicate their crimes. Once again, never assumptions. Appearing nonthreatening was probably what some of these murderers is close enough to strike its victims. Do your research there are some excellent publications covering predatory criminal mentality in detail. You can not protect themselves from something they fear and do not understand.
Dealing with predators
The best way to deal with a predator than ever is being viewed as potential prey in the first place. Easier said than done right? Yes and No. There are risks in all our lives resiliencies that increase or decrease the likelihood that we will be the target of a predator. There are some excellent personal safety programs and self-defense that much can increase your chances to avoid, escape or survive an encounter with a predator and as a potential victim of crime in general. Everyone must receive basic training and education in personal safety and defense. As I tell my children, it is better to have something and not need than to need something and not have it. To say that ever in this situation is not the same as the reality that someday you may be.
You must make a personal investigation. Become with a copy of Gavin Debecker "The Gift of Fear". This impressive book discusses the importance of "listening to your gut" when tries to meet and interact with people. Must be everyone has to read the list. I have always been impressed with the work of Mr. Debecker as is practical, realistic and makes sense. It is a great starting point in educating them on the predators and crime in general.
Understand that the attacks of predators do not occur in a vacuum. They are dynamic and situations and the reasons are as varied as the predator. There are some general guidelines to help you begin to understand the continuum of events that occurs before and after the attack. What I have seen is that in many abusive attacks there is a pattern that is repeated time and time again. If you understand this and are able to interrupt cycle, then are removed from the pool of potential victims.
- The approach. "To be successful in obtaining of a victim, communication is necessary. Unlike what the media has led us to believe that violence and predation seem real predatory violence is different. The form of agreement with the approach is switching gears. When it comes to predators is a good general rule to be always ready to "throw the switch" because the type of rapid blitzkrieg attack actions is the predator in the trade. I always found that when faced with a potential predator to maintain a relaxed / I I'm not a good objective attitude is the best policy. It is easier for them to find another goal to deal with the painful result of a calculation error in the choice of the dam. Maintain awareness of the situation and consider your options. Always have a plan B and an escape route if everything goes sideways.
- Interview Predator. This is how the predator initiates contact with the potential victim. The contact can have a variety of forms and not all of them are obvious. We know that up to 85% of communication is nonverbal. The predators will use these nonverbal messages when doing their cost / benefit of the situation to determine who is and who is not a feasible goal. Self-confident, aware, assertive people are much less vulnerable to potential victims as predators, because it involves personal risk in making the wrong decision of the victim. The closure of the interview is as simple as not playing the game. Do not be fear of being perceived as rude. Be direct and assertive (strong). Drawing attention to oneself is a good thing, predators in general, do not want witnesses. Contact with eyes and posture are excellent indicators of confidence in themselves, they used to communicate non-verbally that you are a poor choice as a victim. Keep his hands out of pockets and ready in case you need to defend themselves.
- I am a great believer in, if you can run, climbing if you can, and fight if you have to philosophy. In order to injure a predator should always have one thing in contact. Keep this in mind, if you can not touch you, can not hurt you. Always know where you are, where you go, where you can find safety, or where it can be run safely if you have to escape and evade. Redirect directly and assertively any attempt to initiate contact with you, times and places that are inappropriate or that are potentially vulnerable. This not only means physical contact, be the both from other media like the Internet that could also be placed at risk. All this boils down to planning. You should think about how to handle these situations before you have fear, adrenaline and possibly injured.
- Attack. When a predator attacks usually be brutal, fast and effective. You should be prepared for the reality of how it is produced quickly and painfully violence. You should also realistically train for how it will treat with him. If your training and education does not realistically address these realities that are being put into a dangerous complacency of mind. Never make assumptions about how you will be attacked. I can tell you from personal experience, in all my years of working with violent offenders, I have never seen a predator attack occur in a is regarded as fair or equitable to the victim. Usually from behind, when they can not defend themselves or when 5 to 1. Account for these factors when you are planning and training.
Taking you out of the potential victim pool is increasingly self-confident, mentally tough, better educated and prepared. As I mentioned earlier, are predators looking for victims they perceive as easy, weak or controllable. As you look they are carrying out your own risk / reward and evaluation are making decisions based on their reactions to the interview, past experience and level of arousal. If you are perceived as too great a risk / threat, then it is likely that you bypass as a potential victim. Self-confidence and mental toughness are skills that can be acquired through education, training, and practice.
The other side of the coin is the learning of urban survival and self defense skills that will allow survive if you can not avoid or escape a predator. It is vital to understand the difference between self defense and martial arts. Both have enormous value, but not are the same things. Again, you should do your research. It's your life and your responsibility.
Training should be realistic, simple and meaningful. No sense to spend the time to learn skills designed for the ring or sport and hope that the transfer to a real situation. Will not. Let me give you an example. You knows how to ride a bicycle right? Does that mean we know how to mount a high-powered drag motorcycles or bicycles on a track? The reality is that most "self defense" does not account for someone who is trying to repeatedly stab a knife or have you already beaten in the abdomen on the ground with a blow from behind.
The training should include adrenal stress response that both the predator and the prey is experienced. Training should take into account the fact that the predator may be under the influence of drugs and alcohol and immune to a lot of pain and damage. This would seriously affect how to neutralize them as a threat and it is likely that techniques to achieve the goal with the least harm to himself as possible. You need to be realistic. A lock Doll / strike nerves will not do anything for a man angry, irrational, that is a priority in methamphetamine. Do not believe me? Well, I work with a large group ERT guys in a team, we have a lot of years / variety of experience in the arts of combat. We train regularly, are in good shape, and we experienced and motivated. Here's the thing with all of those things back, I've seen psychotic rise from the ground with 500 pounds of law enforcement officer in the back, arms and legs. The point is, be prepared. If you are facing this kind of guy, you'd better be prepared to do some serious damage or even better run, because if they get their hands that could be very, very bad.
Finally, we must apply what you learn and maintain their training. The best plan established in the world is completely useless if you do not use. Proper training will go a long way to keeping you safe, but you have to practice to make it work. Continue to educate themselves about how active predators and other criminals and why they are successful both times. Learn everything you can about social engineering and how it is used for access to potential victims. Learn from people who have real experience working with such individuals, because their ideas could save your life. Please account what I said earlier about the assumptions. Not all predators are the same, or are seeking such victim. Everything is fluid and you should be able to roll with the punches. Always have a plan "B".
