The registration of a vehicle in the U.S. without being a U.S. citizen?
I am a Canadian living in Mexico and working with my FM3. My girlfriend is Mexican. I have a branch Dune Buggy. But I know that is illegal in Mexico, you can not put a plaque on it. So I was wondering if I go to the U.S. if its possible to put a U.S. plate on it. Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to put a plate on a vehicle? I know you can make a Dune Buggy in the U.S. legal by the addition of windscreen ect …
You would be wise to contact the U.S. Federal Department of Transportation (202-366-0123, www.nhtsa.dot.gov), Environmental Protection Agency (202-272-0167, www.epa.gov) and the U.S. Customs (www.cbp.gov/) to determine whether particular vehicle can be imported to the U.S. But I hold my breath, if I were you and I have serious doubts that the vehicle will meet federal safety requirements and the environment, not to mention the state. Even if that were the amount money you're going to have to spend to get the vehicle to meet the standards will be several times the value of the car. You would have been better to buy a car from Southern California and drive to Mexico.
