The automatic transmission also known as "Auto". An automatic transmission is an automobile gearbox that can change gear ratios automatically as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver from having to change started manually. Similar but larger devices are also used for commercial and heavy commercial vehicles and equipment.
More transmissions have a set of automatic selection of possible gear ranges, often with a parking pawl feature that will lock the output shaft of the transmission. Continuously variable transmissions may change the proportions in the range rather than between set gear ratios. Continuously variable transmissions have been used for decades in two-wheel motorcycles, but have had limited use in some car models. Recently, however, CVT technology has gained greater acceptance among manufacturers and customers, particularly in Nissan cars and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles.
Some machines with limited speed and range fixed speed motor, as some forklift trucks and lawnmowers, use only a few converter to provide a variable gear motor to the wheels.
The need for a transmission in a car is a consequence of the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. Engines typically operate at a range of 600 about 7000 revolutions per minute, although this varies, and is typically less for diesel engines, while the car's wheels rotate between 0 rpm and around 1800 rpm.
The engine provides its highest torque outputs approximately in the middle of its range, but often the more torque is required when the vehicle is from rest or traveling slowly. Therefore, a system that transforms the engine's output so that it can provide high torque at low speeds, but also operate at speeds road with the engine operating within its limits, is required. Transmissions perform this transformation
