UK Indoor Karting – Karts and the Championship
Indoor karting is a popular motor sport in the UK. It's the kind of motor sport so open-wheel are generally small scale circuits. The vehicles are four wheel drive, small size, of various designs and are called as the karts, go-karts, or gearbox / Shifter karts. They are basically of two types: those with gearboxes (which race on both the long and short circuits) and those with direct transmission (which the race of short circuits).
To a newcomer all the karts seem same but vary in speed are available in many classes to meet wide range of needs and abilities. There Superkarts can go at the speed of 250 km / h compared with the go-karts with a top speed of 25 km / h. The main components of a kart are: chassis, engine, transmission and tires.
Chassis is made of tubular steel and has no suspension. So it has to be rigid enough not to break or give way in a turn and flexible enough to work as a suspension. The rigid chassis allows the use of different characteristics of different circumstances. As the dry conditions, using a stiffer chassis compared to a more flexible chassis for the conditions of traction in wet or other poor. Some of the best chassis permits rebar in the back, front and side are added or removed as race conditions.
To an amusement park go-karts are powered by a 4-stroke engine or electric motor, but for racing karts, small 2 stroke or 4-two-stroke engines are used. A KF1 kart with a 125cc two-stroke engine and a total weight including the driver of 150 kilos has a top speed of 140 km / h. It takes a little over 3 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km / h with a 125 cc shifter kart (6 gears) and a top speed of 185 km / h on long circuits.
In a kart meant for indoor karting, power is transmitted from the rear axle by a chain. The relationship between the motor and gears are adapted according to the configuration of the track to get the most from the engine. Wheels and tires are much smaller compared with ordinary cars and edges are formed by either magnesium or aluminum.
