Better Things for Better Living (part-1)
In fact all matter on Earth is made of chemicals and everything is a chemical material or a mixture of chemicals. Our house is a virtual chemistry laboratory fascinating products derived from raw materials such as water, soil, rocks, etc. are in the biosphere of our planet. If we just scratch the surface of all the hundreds of chemicals used in every home, open your eyes to the importance of chemical synthesis, engineering, manufacturing and distribution of substances used in our daily life. Our homes, apartments, schools, offices, parks, tracks, cars, buses, planes and trains all these are our "home" at one time or another because these are all parts of the house only small we all share of our one true home, "Spaceship Earth" and through our study of chemistry, as well as we are aware a beautiful home is truly a "world of chemistry, a world of possibilities."
The wood is mainly cellulose, the amounts Small hemicellulose and lignin. All of these compounds are synthesized structural parts of the trees and are made through photosynthesis dioxide from carbon and water. Cellulose is simply glucose molecules linked together in the form of beta to make long-chain molecules. Hemi cellulose pulp differs from that sugar molecules that make up only contain five carbon atoms instead of six, the missing carbon atom which is not part of the six rings of links. Lignin is very different, is a polymer of aromatic alcohols number of conifers such as alcohol and vanillin.
Glass is an amorphous mixture of oxides silica (SiO2), calcium oxide (CaO) and sodium oxide (Na2O). We know that the mixtures are not compounds because of the composition of a mixture is not fixed but may vary over wide ranges. White sand is almost pure SiO2 and used directly in the manufacture of glass, while the oxides of sodium and calcium are formed by heating sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate, respectively
Na2CO3 Na2O + CO2
CaCO3 CaO + CO2
These ingredients are heated together until all are melted and dissolved together. The mixture is cooled slowly until stiffens the glass, which does not crystallize, so often spoken of as a super-cooled liquid and not as a solid. In normal window glass, the relationship molar of the oxides is about 1.6 moles of Na2O and CaO 1.0 to 6 moles of moles of SiO2. Glass used for other purposes different proportions and are often other oxides. Well known examples are the Pyrex glass, which includes 12.5% boron oxide, lead crystal, which normally contains 16% PbO; and stained glass, which contains multiple items selected of the transition elements of Ti to Cu, depending on the desired color.
Although nails are not very high tech materials, we all know it is necessary not only to build Strawberry also hit a number of purposes. Most nails are made of steel, which is an alloy containing mostly iron and carbon. Nails that never expected to be in contact with water are flat steel, but the nails used in the installation of tiles or panels field must be resistant to rust. To avoid corrosion, galvanized steel nails frequently. This means they are coated with zinc, a good reducing agent so that instead of the iron is oxidized, the oxidized zinc and steel will not rust. Since zinc melts at a temperature (4190C) well below the melting point of iron (15350C) steel nails may be simply immersed in molten zinc, remove and cool.
Another option is to use nails creaks aluminum instead of steel. There is a difference crucial among the products formed when iron and aluminum react with oxygen. While iron is the characteristic red oxide, Fe2O3, which peels and allows more of iron in contact with air, aluminum is also its oxide, Al2O3, but the oxide adheres tightly to the metal and prevents oxygen from reaching the rest of the metal. Aluminum is not as strong as steel is rarely used for structural purposes. However, besides being lightweight, it is valuable to add to the decor.
People often speak of cement and concrete as if they were the same thing, but in reality are different substances. Concrete is the substance leads by and is made of cement, sand or gravel and water. The mixture of these three ingredients is done shortly before the wet concrete is put in place to harden. Cement the other hand, is made by heating clay (usually 2 SiO2 Al2O3. 2H2O) and limestone (CaCO3) until they begin to melt at about 12600C. This fusion called clinker and cooled and dried to form what is sold commercially as Portland cement. Although cement is not a pure compound, a compound typically Ca3SiO5 clinker, which is more clearly written as 3CaO. SiO2.
We can believe or not, despite concrete and cement have been used for millennia, there is still disagreement about what is exactly what happens when a mixture of sand, water and Portland cement is allowed to set and harden. It is clear that water reacts with CaO and Al2O3 to Ca (OH) 2 and Al (OH) 3 which react with calcium to form calcium silicate crystals of aluminum, which are intertwined with each other. Concrete set in a matter of hours and then continues to tighten for years.
