Gas Powered Mopeds

Can someone tell me a little about mopeds/gopeds?
i don’t know much at all besides i need something to ride about 5 miles a couple a times of week and want a gas powered moped or goped im not sure about those terms but here is what i was looking at
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/mcy/1372467664.html
what does it mean it needs a 2 stroke gas mixture at 25/1
also how fast does 49 cc’s go like 20 mph?
do you need a license or insurance for one of theese?
also is t here anything bad about 2 stroke engines compared to 4 stroke?
and is 200$ a reasonable price for something like this?
thank you!
This particular item was designed as a kids toy.
Rather an expensive kids toy, though. In this day
of trying to make things appealing by making them
look, and act like some ‘space age’ technology,
they have taken things that were invented many
years ago, and made them appear as something
new, and different. In this case they have added
a small motor, and some even come with a pedestal
type seat that can be removed.
Unfortunately, what they don’t tell you is that these
‘toys’ are not made to carry weight over about
140 to 150 pounds. They are slow, and dangerous,
and are not allowed on roads in most any state.
They cannot be licensed to operate on any road.
They are classed as a ‘motor driven vehicle’, but
not an actual motor vehicle. If it were a ‘motor
driven cycle’, which is one that can be licensed,
it would be with a 50cc engine or less for that,
but is designed as a small motorcycle.
A good example of a motor driven cycle is the
MoPed. The MoPeds were first invented from
the original design of the motorized bicycle.
They first started appearing in the early 50′s.
Due to the unique sound of their engines,
many times they were referred to ‘Wing Dings’.
The MoPed (now just listed as Moped) name
came from Motorized Pedacycle. It was just
a cross between a motor scooter of the time,
which was first made by the Cushman Company,
that was much like the motor scooters of today,
but not so streamlined, and a bicycle. Actually,
they were kind of ‘boxy’ looking. The first ones
even had the old kickstart Maytag washing
machine motor.
Mopeds are still around today. There are quite
a few clubs that have regular travel get-togethers.
I haven’[t seen an older, original Moped for sale
in recent times, although many are still around.
The newer ones can get rather pricey, and go
for around $1500. If you can find an older one
you might be able to get it for around $300 to
$400.
The unique thing about these is that you can
pedal them like a bicycle, and even pedal them
to start the motor. If the motor doesn't run, it
will still work as a bicycle.
These Mopeds are motor driven cycles with
engines that can run up to around 45-60 mph.
It just depends upon which engine you have,
and how good of condition. They can be run
on the road as they must have license plates,
and the operator must have a drivers license.
I would not look to the little scooters such as
the one in your site example, but look to a
small motor cycle, or motor driven cycle.
One thing though. Not all motor driven cycles
are Mopeds. Some are just regular, small
motorcycles. Those do not have the pedals,
and are commonly built on a heavier frame.
Now, about 2-stroke engines versus the
4-stroke engines. the 2's do need a gas
and oil mixture, whereas the 4's do not.
The 4's have a crankcase for the oil, and
needs no oil in the gas for any lubrication.
The 2's are good for off road 'dirt turning',
but not so great for much on road runs.
The plugs in a 2 stroke get fouled often,
and must be cleaned, or replaced. The
2's must be worked on often to maintain
them, whereas the 4s require much less
maintenance. With a 4 stroke you can
get a two, or four cylinder engine that
can last for many years with little trouble.
One of the best, most durable, all round
machines ever built is the Honda 350cc
twin cylinder motorcycle. It is small enough
to ride on or off road, and has a large enough
engine to be allowed on controlled access
highways such as an Interstate. It is very
versatile in ability, quite easy to handle, and
has been one of the most safe to ride. A
very close second to this one is the Honda
454. (A 450cc engine with four cylinders.)
[Saying all of this is sure a change for an
old Harley man.] You can usually find a
used 350 for around $200 to $400 from a
person.
