Smart cars are safe?

With the recent concern about gas prices, many people here in Denver is looking for higher mileage vehicle they can find to drive in their daily lives commute. Denver has seen a boom in scooter sales and increased interest in cycling in recent years. However, for those who can not ride a bike, or do not feel safe riding a scooter in rush hour traffic, there is a better option.

The Smart is a radical change in the typical American car. Developed in Europe, where gas prices always been high, the streets are narrow and parking spaces in a award, this car is half the size of a typical car. It only takes two people and weighs nearly a thousand pounds less than what a lot of options other gas miser there. So, small size of this order means that it is dangerous to drive?

Most of us assume that the larger a vehicle – the safer. This is true to some extent. However, safety engineers have been able to pack a lot of design features in today's smaller cars that reduce the likelihood of being seriously injured in an accident. The Smart is a great example of this.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IHS) has recently made global crash tests with this vehicle and the result was better than most people would expected size.

If front and side impact, the Smart Car received a good grade. This is actually the highest rating possible under the rules IHS. Was rated acceptable in an impact from behind. IHS made an off-set frontal crash test that simulates real world most automobile collisions. In a pure frontal impact test conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Smart received a rating of five stars for protect the driver and a three-star passenger protection.

Therefore, it seems like the smart car designers have done a remarkable job in making this car a safe choice for many drivers. If you are looking for a vehicle that is used primarily on city streets with little or no highway driving, I would consider this as an option. If I needed a car to drive on the roads, or if I need to carry more than two, I would like to see other options such as the Honda Civic, which has always maintained an impressive safety record, along with excellent fuel efficiency.
