A Brief History of ATV

As with many items that have gained great popularity with the public, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) has a history very interesting. What began as a practical resource agriculture has become the machine around which has been a very competitive sport and the racing industry built.

Long before Honda introduced a vehicle in 1970, starting the "modern" era of the ATV, many U.S. companies offer Small SUVs that were amphibious in nature and were designed to traverse swamps, streams and ponds as well as dry land. These vehicles were built with fiberglass or hard plastic and usually had six wheels, all driven, providing a strong traction component. They were destined the riders and had multiple flyers or control levers instead of the mechanism of the standard type motorcycle used in the modern sport utility vehicle.

In Japan, a similar vehicle was being used on farms that were located in mountainous terrain. In 1970, Honda introduced the US90 and was aided in its marketing efforts by the James Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever", a film in which the ATV played a significant role. The only vehicle listed large balloon-type tires instead of a mechanical suspension. The ability to go anywhere in the country or the land that the vehicles could most other Do not cross soon made them popular U.S. and Canadian hunters, and those just looking for a good ride.

In the early 1980's, ATV's were introduced that had a lower profile tire and suspension. It was at this time that the first three-wheeled ATV was developed for public use. During this decade, many manufacturers entered the "sport" ATV market, including high profile names such as Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Polaris.

Safety issues arose with the three-wheeled ATV is a little known fact that the nascent industry was nearly banned from the public by Congress because of these security problems. Three wheels finished in production due to consent decrees between the major manufacturers and the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the 1987 four-wheel ATV became the norm. Although these consent decrees ended in 1997, allowing companies to once again make and market a three-wheel models, very few have been commercialized effectively and sold.

Today's ATV models generally fall into any of the sports fields or public service. The sports models, for the most part, are small, light two-wheel drive vehicles with a manual suspension and rapid acceleration. The utility ATV, however, are much larger four drive vehicles on wheels and have a maximum speed much slower than their sports. They also have a much needed feature, the ability to carry small loads on racks attached and / or small dump beds. Sporting ATV's are designed for performance rather than utility and can reach speeds of 100 miles per hour or more.

The ATV market has caught the interest of consumers of Generation Y (1918-1924) and the Vehicle road has exploded in popularity in recent years, even having its own racetrack. With more and more companies in the ATV market is practically sure that this single vehicle off the road is here to stay.
