Will a lawn mower battery work on my 3-wheeler?

I have an 85 Honda Big Red 250 with a shot battery. The ATV repair shop said that if I put a lawn mower battery on it, it will eventually mess up my starter and/or alternator. Is there any truth to that?…or is he just trying to sell me one of his? The 3-wheeler is like 22 years old, and I don’t wanna put that kind of money into it.

Check and see if the batteries are of the same voltage output.
