Fitting a motorcycle moto x, off-road tyre,
Fitting a motorcycle moto x tyre or a off-road tyre, to a motorcycle wheel which has bead locks .
Moto x tyres have a very hard ply wall , they are designed this way to be able to run at very low tyre pressure, this is to get traction , with the aid of a tyre bead lock, the tyre will be held in one place on the wheel.
The tyre bead lock sits inside the tyre, wedging tightly against the tyre beads on both sides of the motorcycle off-road tyre.
Tools needed to do this.
1, Valve Key
2, Tyre Bead Breaker, http://www.motopsychos.co.uk/tyrebead-breaker–tyc008-14987-p.asp
3, Pair of Tyre Levers, http://www.motopsychos.co.uk/tyre-lever-handled-deluxe-type-pair-tylh-14986-p.asp
4, Tyre Bead Soap & Brush,
5, 13mm / 14mm Spanner
6, Rubber Mallet
Make sure the wheel is clean and has no sharp edges, also check inside the motorcycle tyre for debris and remove if found.
In some cases the inner tube can be placed inside the tyre at the beginning and slightly inflated.
This way usually works OK when fitting a front moto x motorcycle tyre, also when fitting a rear moto x motorcycle tyre if the motorcycle tyre is soft enough to work with.
Starting with placing the inner tube inside the motorcycle tyre increases the chance of pinching and damaging the inner tube when levering the first tyre bead on the rim.
How to start !
Soap one side of the tyre, this should be the side you decide to fit first, care to be taken as the motorcycle tyre may have a directional arrows of rotation on it.
Hold the wheel up so the bead lock is at the 12 o’clock position, then hold, press the the nut on the end of the thread of the tyre bead lock to touch the rim, this lifting the bead lock up into the air clear of the wheel well.
Now place the motorcycle tyre over the bead lock into the well of the motorcycle wheel, now push the motorcycle tyre into the wheel well and on to the rim with your hands as far as you can physically manage.
It may be time to add more soap to the area of the tyre bead which is left to fit , you may find it is now easy to soap the rim also in the same area.
Now the wheel is laying flat on a soft mat or cardboard, kneel down onto the motorcycle tyre, this will support the tyre levers when levering the first bead onto the rim, take small bites when hooking the tyre onto the rim, the last part may be very tight for you to get the tyre lever in, this is when you can use the rubber mallet to tap the final bead on.
Using the mallet reduces the chances of marking the rims with the tyre levers, it is good to use rim guards which attach to the edge of the rims where the tyre levers touch.
Urgency of using rim guards depends on the newness and the condition of the wheel.
Now you have fitted the first bead, pick the wheel up so the valve hole is at the top.(12o’clock position)
Now its time to locate the valve into the valve hole.
To do this, place the two levers on the rim in the open side of the tyre , one tyre lever on each side of the valve hole.
With the levers, bend the tyre over to expose the valve hole to you.
Now place the valve of the inner tube into the valve hole and then release the tension of the levers, now place the valve nut back onto the valve thread, this will stop the valve from falling back inside the tyre when fitting the second bead.
Now using your fingers place the inner tube inside the motorcycle tyre, be sure to get twists or kinks out of the inner tube when you do this, once the inner tube is inside the tyre, you can inflate it slightly, this helps to straighten the inner tube inside the tyre.
Now soap the outside bead of the motorcycle tyre ready to be fitted.
Start fitting the tyre bead at the tyre bead lock area, to do this you must hold the tyre bead lock up high inside the tyre, this is done easy by pushing the nut of the bead lock up to the rim.
Be sure that the bead is deep into the wheel well.
Now you can kneel onto the tyre using your body weight to hold the tyre in-place, hook the tyre with the tyre levers, you may have to move your weight around as you go around with levering the motorcycle tyre onto the rim, you must stop the tyre bead lifting on the opposite side you are levering, i tend to work my way up to the top (12 o’clock position) taking small bites with the tyre levers.
If the final part of the tyre bead is to tight to put on with the tyre levers, ad more tyre bead soap with a brush , with a rubber mallet, tap the last part of the motorcycle tyre bead onto the rim.
Before inflating . ad more soap to both tyre beads, this will assist in seating the tyre to the rim during inflation.
Fit a pump to the valve and start to inflate the motorcycle tyre, keep fingers clear of the bead area !
If using a airline to inflate the moto x motorcycle tyre , inflate the inner tube slowly, this allows trapped air inside the tyre to escape, the trapped air will escape through holes in the rim such as spoke holes, bead lock nut hole and valve hole.
If the air persist leaking from these place it is a sign of the inner tube has been damaged during fitting.
If the air stops leaking early when inflating the tube , this means all is well and carry on seating the tyre properly on to the rim.
Remember to tighten the bead lock nut after tyre inflation, its good to leave the motorcycle tyre over inflated and drop to the correct tyre pressure before use.
Stephen Bonnici at motopsychos.co.uk has worked as a tyre technician on all types of vehicles tyres .
Stephen Bonnici worked as a tyre break down fitter or what is now known as a mobile tyre fitter for a large tyre company.
While working as a mobile tyre fitter , Stephen Bonnici removed replaced and repaired all kinds of tyres such as plant machinery tyres, haulage trucks tyres ,cars tyres ,vans tyres ,motorcycles tyres .
Although tyre changer machines are available now to use for mobile tyre fitting, they were not at the time.
Stephen Bonnici mastered the art of tyre changing with the use of tyre levers, Stephen Bonnici raced motorcycles and always found himself changing his own motorcycle tyres at events.
