Is riding an ATV through water hard on it?

My 08 polaris sportsman is leaking oil and they think that one of the gaskets is bad where two parts of the engine come together…would riding it through about a foot and a half of water cause that gasket to go bad?

No. That sounds like a factory flaw. The only thing to be aware of when riding through deep water is to make sure you are not submerging the exhaust, water into the exhaust system can cause problems. There is also some maintenance that needs to be done to your drive system if you drive in water that is deeper than the hubs on your wheels. This varies, but would not cause a gasket to fail. I would be very surprised, given the reputation of Polaris, if they didn’t repair the gasket on their dime, unless there are some other extreme conditions such as high mileage, etc.
