A Big 5 Safari Adventure in the Western Cape, South Africa
The Western Cape offers a number of private game reserves and wilderness unique experiences to choose from, Colin And I chose two well-established properties to share with you this month, and Aquila Private Game Reserve Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve, both within a three hour tour Cape Town.
The four-star Aquila Private Game Reserve offers safaris in a malaria free Big 5 games to territory only 2 hours drive from Cape Town. Surrounded by a rolling landscape of the Little Karoo semi-desert, the scenery is spectacular.
Private Eagle Game Reserve actively supports the previously disadvantaged community in the nearby town of Touws River. Under the sponsorship of the team of Aquila, which employ over 120 people, sponsorship of full time teachers, and local cricket team among other generous programs of sustainable development, so vital in our tactic of responsible tourism. Have been strong progress achieved to eradicate exotic trees and invasive plant species in the area. This ongoing program contributes to the preservation of water in an area that receives as only 400 ml of rain per year! Throughout their bathrooms using natural biodegradable bath products to support their environmental responsibilities. Very positive and commendable actions!
Our experience at Aquila Private Game Reserve left us with mixed feelings however. Having spent time in African Safari numerous other properties in various parts of southern Africa, we feel it is more than Aquila is sold for what it terms as "Real Africa" a statement on its website. The cheetah and the lions are in boxes and they can be seen walking up and down the fence line of their respective campuses, crocodiles are in a small water camp in the shelter for all to see and feed the whole game every night, not exactly the real African feel is real and what could be marketed as "Real Africa". However, Aquila Private Game Reserve has the advantage that you can get really good, close up photos wildlife that can rate you along with friends back home when their part of Africa experience. You have the opportunity to see four of the Big 5! Even knowledgeable rangers rarely see mountain leopards, 5 of 5 Great.
Colin and I met with the General Manager, Leon Conservation and the manager, Patrick. Two youngish men with passion, knowledge and commitment to both the environment and guest experience. Aquila is a product bespoke day visit and both felt that is very much a work in progress. " Aquila and can offer a good choice of safari in time to come. At this time, however, we believe it is expensive for general admission for overnight guests staying for a night or two. The accommodation offered is standard and service dining, is pedestrian but well presented. Total service is good and the rangers are knowledgeable in their area of responsibility. It was disappointing that offers the quality of end lower semi sweet sparkling wine from South Africa, marshmallows and biltong in the game unit in the evening at sunset. A lost opportunity to capture the hearts and minds of twelve guests in our vehicle … ….
Aquila offers two fun and adventure activities at the lodge to be a safari on horseback and quad safaris. Both offer a unique experience. The great advantage of visiting this property is in a full day trip. For people staying in Cape Town and surrounds with a time limited to take African wildlife, valuable photos and close encounters of animals abound. thoughts generally come for a day! For the future, its conference rooms to develop over the next six months would be a good choice of venue.
A hop, skip and jump one took us north Aquila through a spectacular landscape, climbing a mountain, rolling over some rough roads of gravel to the south of the Cederberg region. The four-star, 15 000 hectares Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve was our chosen destination. The final 16 km to the lodge was the only similar fascinating sandstone rock formations found in the Cederberg area. Hot (36 degrees Celsius), dry and almost lunar in character and feel.
Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve offers a wilderness experience with a cultural touch. General Cederberg area is famous for his paintings of Kagga Kamma Bushmen and offers a safari information cultural guided by a comprehensive field guide knowledge and experience, Jaco, who is also the General Manager. Jaco is a great host, a lover of Mother Nature and have comprehensive knowledge of the Bushmen. The time spent in the Sabi Sands in the inimitable Mala Mala Game Reserve, in conjunction with the heritage of Namibia did time in your company totally convincing! The game roams its reserves just a plains game, Bontebok, Eland, burchells Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Klipspringer and some of the species antbear and small as the Jackal.
One of the most important selling points is that it is so far from the city and light pollution city, star gazing is great, has depth and is really exceptional (almost as good as Sutherland, see our travel advisory in September 2007). Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve offers a unique observatory in a good position with a mini 10-inch telescope. Close views of our moon, planets, constellations and other fascinating distant space objects can be observed. A worthwhile experience!
Kagga Kamma offers unique accommodation. Ten imitation sandstone cave like structures built up against the sandstone rock formations merge into their surroundings. Comfortable beds, fresh white sheets and air conditioning are really welcome. His "outcrop" sleep option is special! This is simply a must do for you! Imagine if you will, a natural rock outcrop, two shade trees and a vast expanse of an endless vista. Imagine the wit of man to add all you want in the way of luxury amenities necessary for entertaining human from dusk until well after dawn the next day. Long before sunset, we boarded and were escorted quad bike the two miles separate the main field and outcrop. Our arrival is impressive. A stately bedroom truly equipped with a king size bed, bedside tables, lounge and coffee table center adorned with all sorts of culinary delights. The African sun setting directly in front of us, our host prepared glass, lights our lamps Slack then discreetly disappears. We are only commune with Mother Nature!
For those of you still have not experienced this huge hurry to do it, for those who have come here and allow His will be presented with a history of sunset, all animal actors on stage before joining settle down. The afternoon sky was planted a pink, gray turning red, then steel, the stars emerged with a brightness and depth. Hole Black was presented by the Southern Cross, shooting stars abounded. silence roared, black velvet evening greeted our gracious burning fire. Peace, joy and solitude invaded. Our picnic on the lawn was adequate but unimaginative, cold cuts, some excellent cheese, chicken legs and well prepared and presented combined with a green salad potato salad, conveniently packaged in plastic containers. Our discussions of Africa where the night sky. Allow Language penetrate your mind and you will hear the mélange of words, dreams, hopes and aspirations. Colin was built in the early hours of the morning to witness the moon particularly in light rising white wax.
The Sun came from behind our rock color cast, heat and light in the distant hills awakening ethereal, for the experienced traveler, for the beginner just soul food. An excellent choice honeymoon if you're looking to get a sample of peace and for those wanting to experience the fifteen hours of uninterrupted privacy. Due to the naturalness of this option depends on the weather.
In Overall our experience in Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve was a nice learning curve experience made special by outcrops. We recommend the outcrop without hesitation, without But when measured against similar properties in the region focused their rates in proportion to the overall value for the rest of the property is high.
