U.S. presidential limousines – A walk through history
It should not be too much of a shock that the first car to higher political office U.S. running on hot air.
Steam to be exact.
It was little more than 100 years that President Theodore Roosevelt was transported Sportsman on Washington DC (very reluctantly one imagines), in a bright white vapor Stanley. In 1904 the choice of cars was limited, and no one could foresee that the car Steam the road soon whips and Betamax video tapes (at least all the brothers Stanley, who had founded his company steam cars with money they earned selling photo business dry plates at a little known company called Eastman-Kodak.) Although Roosevelt's successor, the portly William Howard Taft used a steam car as head coach. Taft first garage even set the White House, installation of automotive engineers and steam in the presidential stables already obsolete.
It was not until President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that the Presidential Limousine became a project to measure. Cadillac designed and delivered two convertible, called "Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth to the White House. Equipped to carry ammunition and radio equipment, they were first presidential limousines built with the needs of U.S. chief executive in mind.
While struggling to hide his partial paralysis due to polio, FDR still wanted to be a man of the people and that is why the Secret Service in charge of the "Sunshine Special, a V-12 Lincoln convertible which allowed the president to look out and shake the hands of his countrymen, while at the same time providing a foot-rail and handholds for mounted police outside the car. The "Sunshine Special" is perhaps one of the most recognizable presidential limousine, as seen in many photos FDR, but it's time as a means get closer to town president was interrupted.
Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor the "Sunshine Special" was considered not safe enough for a president at war. Although the Secret Service did not adequately armored vehicle in its stable solution was found on the Department's impound Treasury. From the moment of agitation President "Day of Infamy" speech until Sun Special FDR could be adequately updated traveling in 1928 heavy armor title = "Cadillac Town Sedan"> Cadillac Sedan city that had been taken on the asset known gangster Al Capone.
From that day forward the Presidential limousine stopped being a mere means of stylish transport, and was redesigned in place of what the Secret Service referred as a command vehicle – a vehicle on the offensive and defensive most advanced automotive innovations of the period.
The only time that a Presidential limousine has maintained a strong president was href = "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS-100-X" title = "SS-100-X"> SS-100-X, a heavily modified Lincoln Continental limousine that forever be remembered in history as JFK's limousine. While the controversy surrounding the events can always fatal November 22, 1963 there are the undisputed facts, specifically the recognition that the air conditioning unit in the SS-100-X was not enough for cooling limousine, when the car was covered by a specially designed Plexiglas bubble top. Nobody knows whether President John F. Kennedy would have been safer in a Plexiglas bubble, but the Secret Service never to use a convertible as the primary presidential limousine. Only Richard Nixon – insisted that have a roof solar, that could stand up and greet the crowds – the presidential head naked outdoors.
The title = "limousine JFK"> Saloon JFK, along with many other historic vehicles is now in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Many other presidential limousines are available for inspection at various museums around the U.S., but the practice of returning the car to the manufacturer ended the presidency of Ronald Reagan. The Secret Service now destroy all the presidential limousine pulled in order to maintain their defensive capabilities in secret.
This means that one can only speculate on the functions advanced newer models, though supposedly the current model (referred to jokingly as "The Beast" by Secret Service agents charged with its transport around the world), has all the basic security features "common to most armored limousines. Most of the cars command worldwide are expected to have bullet-proof glass, armor, tires and even Run-Flat a hermetically sealed interior to defend against chemical attacks. In the case of the U.S. presidential limousine can only imagine the added security of the advanced features Secret Service has instituted.
