101 things you should and should not bring with you to China

I know it's a long list and I do not, by any means welcome to bring a lot of things. Different things are important to different people. Use this list as a reminder not to forget things. Remember to travel light, bring as little as possible and save space to put a lot of gifts back from China!

Things you should bring

  1. Passport.
  2. Chinese visa.
  3. Other legal documents to prove they are authorized to enter and remain in the country.
  4. A photocopy of all your legal documents. So you can take with you when you're on tour.
  5. Air route and schedule.
  6. The drivers license.
  7. Travel insurance and income.
  8. Copy of your medical history.
  9. Medical Access and Security. This is as it should be. I recommend International SOS.
  10. Address of your destination in China (both Chinese and English if possible).
  11. If I had to submit a letter of invitation for the visa, bring this letter with you.
  12. Your hotel reservation.
  13. Important contact information. Most times, people do not use their home phones in China because the charge is very expensive. So if that is something we are planning on do, then write down the numbers you need on your mobile, that way you can conveniently to make a phone call from China by using a calling card.
  14. A local map. If you're traveling on your own and planning to take public transport or walking, this is very important to have.
  15. Pocket tissue. This is not really what you need to bring the U.S., but make sure you have at hand while in China. It is rare but in most public restrooms (except in luxury restaurants or hotels) do not provide toilet paper.
  16. Credit Cards. Visa and MasterCard are common use in China.
  17. traveler's checks. Do not keep your receipts in one place with the controls.
  18. Some cash in Chinese Yuan and U.S. dollars. Although most of the places and restaurants accept major credit cards (not all credit cards accepted international though), but the areas of purchases, food stalls, taxis, ticket offices, etc, accept cash only Chinese. Also, try to avoid foreign exchange from the airport, it definitely has the crappiest rate. Go to your bank and ask for your options.
  19. Deodorant with anti-transpiration. This is quite difficult to find in China, especially in small cities. The place I can think of leading such a thing is the store named "Watson"
  20. Razors. Already in 2005, when some of my foreign friends come to China, we look everywhere for shavers and could not find them anywhere! Things may have changed, but just in case, bring your own.
  21. Shaving cream.
  22. Shampoo and conditioners. I use Pantene, and although the brand is everywhere in China, but I think the quality is different. It's definitely watery and my hair feels drier after using the Chinese brand. So if you're tough on your hair, bring your own.
  23. Sunscreen. You can actually find a lot of sunscreen lotions in the department stores and supermarkets. But the SPF factor and other functions are limited (SPF does not go as high as here in the U.S.). Tanning is the challenging sun protection is not available because everyone tries to keep the skin white.
  24. Insect repellent. The brands in China are mostly oil-based and very inconvenient to apply. If you go in summer, of course, depends on where you are, you probably need it for mosquitoes.
  25. Medicine. Although the Chinese pharmacies do not offer western medicine is definitely a good idea to bring your own! Especially be sure to bring your prescription drugs, antibiotics, medicines for diarrhea, birth control, pain relief and anti-bacterial ointment.
  26. Dental floss. I know they are available in China and people make use of them. But do not expect that they will be guaranteed available along the toothpaste section at any grocery stores.
  27. Mouth wash. Same as above.
  28. Tampons. Can be found in some supermarkets, but rather limited. So bring on the brand you prefer. The pads are readily available throughout the country.
  29. His own clothes, underwear and socks. You will find bargain priced clothing in China, if you wear extra tall or wide in the U.S. then the action is in China would probably be too small. Unless if you are a tourist shopping center use as the Silk Market in Beijing. Women with larger breasts, be sure to bring your own clips.
  30. Large suitcases. From my experience, people who come to visit China usually ended up buying another suitcase because they also bought many things during his visit. Things are more expensive and unique, so be sure to bring your luggage largest you can find, and the light package on the way to China, so leave enough empty space to bring things back. It should be noted however, if you taking domestic flights within China, be careful with the weight of your luggage. As in the U.S., international flights allow a much heavier weight baggage. Domestic flights usually only allow you to check in baggage to 20 pounds.
  31. Mochila. It should especially if you walk everywhere. For girls, so bring your own bag.
  32. Shoes. Get some comfortable shoes and reliable you can walk, hike and run in them. For summer, bring a pair of sandals too. Also taking into account their feet are large, then you probably will not find your shoe size in China.
  33. Electrical converter. Tension in China is 220. Computers, cell phones and cameras no need for voltage converter because they are universal. Check the back of your electronic equipment to identify what the needs of the converter.
  34. Your mobile phone home. If you are from the U.S. and wireless carriers AT & T or T-Mobile, bring your phone and cell phone charger with you. Before doing so, call your telephone company to ask if you can unlock your phone. I did it once with T-Mobile, it was easy and fast (you may need to complete their first contract). When you arrive in China, all you need is to buy a SIM card from China (cost around £ 100 for the card prepaid minutes on it) to replace the original SIM card. If that is not an option for you, you can also find an old cell phone model Nokia China for about U.S. $ 10.
  35. Your laptop. Although there are many internet cafes in big cities in China, and the cost to get online is very cheap per hour. To use Skype, or get online comfort of your hotel, then bring your own.

  47. Alarm.
  48. Products for skin care. China has all the major brands such as Clinique, Lancome, Olay and Estee Lauder. But if you buy in the Chinese department store, which are much more expensive to buy in the U.S.. I guess it's the tax raised the price much higher.
  49. A pencil and a notebook.
  50. If traveling with a baby, be sure to bring all babies things. Such as diapers, wipes, baby food and medicines.
  51. Multi-vitamins.
  52. Toothpaste. According to the FDA, Chinese toothpaste could be hazardous to your health.
  53. Calculator. Could come in handy for currency exchange and negotiating the purchase.
  54. Super glue. In case if something falls apart during its journey.
  55. Café. The majority of coffee in supermarkets are regular instant coffee in China. So if you are big on coffee consumption and do not want to spend too much money at Starbucks. Then bring your own coffee and lots of coffee grounds.
  56. English magazines, novels and books. There are English books in major bookstores in China, but the options are very limited.

  76. F AVOURITES snacks in your country.
  77. The appetite to eat the delicious Chinese food.
  78. Cereals. China has very limited options.

Things not to bring

  1. Hairdryer. Unless your hair dryer can be converted to a different voltage. Most hotels have hairdryers in the room.
  2. Steam Iron. Again, most of the hotel consists of the following. If you need your own, it's cheap to buy one in China.
  3. Armas. That is an absolute NO.
  4. Bicycles. It sounds funny, but in fact some foreigners have tried to check their bikes at the airport. You can find challenging mountain bike pretty good quality in China for about U.S. $ 20 more or less.
  5. Any drug illegal. This is very serious, if captured to transport or sell any in China, will be in serious trouble and their country of origin might not be able to help.
  6. Anything that can be politically sensitive for China.
  7. Live animals. If you are planning to travel with your pet China, NO! I have a dog and I made a lot of research to see if you could carry on his return from Beijing, it is not impossible, but it is too complicated. In First, there is really a document clearly sets out the rules in this case. I even called the airport in Beijing, they all had different answers. The only thing I know you have to leave your pet at the airport for a few weeks for them to check. You'll pay a lot of money and the animal will suffer in the cage for a long time. The worst thing is that if something does not look good, they have every right to send their animals away or kill again.
  8. The plants and soil.
  9. Insects.
  10. Food.
  11. Lots of cash in excess the legal limit.
