What year is my VW engine? Know any good books for repair/service?
I bought a near complete sand rail buggy, and it’s hard buying parts when you can’t tell the guy behind the counter what year your engine is. I know it’s a dual port but, that’s about it. The number on the casting under the generator is H0322197. I also need to find a book for complete wiring diagram, and anything else that is specific to my year range so I can complete my buggy. Thanks in advance.
The H engine is from Aug-1966-to July 69. It was 53 hp at 1500cc. with 83mm pistons. required 91 octane gas. weighted 250 #. Your engine was in the first series, but was compatiable with piston and cyl inder sets up to 1700 cc without machining however the 1700 was prone to cylinder leakage due to the thin cylinder walls.
This engine will bolt up to just about any VW trans.
It was originally a single intake with the 28 PICT, or a PICT-2 carb. If your running dual port heads then the whole thing has been modified. (go figure-dune buggy 40 yr old motor been changed)
Good news is the “H” block was one of their best. I used to search them out when doing an exchange.
